MANVILLE – A father and son have been charged with detonating an explosive device in a park that seriously injured a man.

Deputy Police Chief Craig Jeremiah said a flare cannon, a device that produces a large bang and smoke, exploded, sending shrapnel into several vehicles and homes near Cooper Street in the Lost Valley neighborhood around 8:15 p.m.

A 34-year-old man who was attending a nearby street festival suffered an upper body injury and was flown to Robert Johnson University Hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses told CBS New York that shrapnel struck a car parked in a driveway, shattering the windshield and tearing a hole in the siding of a house. The New Jersey State Police bomb disposal unit was called to the park after the explosion.

Released from custody

Thomas Kaiser, 60, of South Plainfield, and Erich Kaiser, 28, of Monmouth Junction, a South Brunswick neighborhood, were at another party in the neighborhood when they detonated the device, officials said.

They were charged with fourth-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of explosives and three counts of criminal damage to property.

They were released with a court date.
