A newly elected MP says it is an “incredible privilege” to be given the chance to make a difference.

Anna Sabine was elected Liberal Democrat MP for Frome and East Somerset on 5 July.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset, Ms Sabine said her priorities in representing her electorate would be to improve NHS services, ensure road safety and support local business owners.

“I think we need more people from normal backgrounds in Parliament,” she said.

“Real world experience”

Ms Sabine says her motivation for entering politics was her distrust of the system in recent years.

“Not only was I dissatisfied with our government, but I also felt that the state of public life was very poor,” she said.

“I looked at my teenage children and thought about what they thought about the world and whether adults and politicians were solving the problems of our time.”

“I just felt like I needed to put myself out there, with a lot of real-world experience, rather than as a career politician, to see if there’s anything I can do to make things better.”

Ms Sabine, who moved to the area 20 years ago, received 16,580 votes from her constituents, putting her more than 5,000 ahead of Conservative candidate Lucy Trimnell.

She said it was a “nice” but also difficult transition to get the result.

“It’s a very strange experience because you don’t really think that you could win,” continued Ms Sabine.

“You don’t really think about becoming a member of parliament until you suddenly realise you are one at 5 a.m. on a Friday morning.

“As an adult you can deal with it, but as a child it is very difficult to understand why your parents are suddenly away most of the time every week.”

Ms Sabine is a mother of two teenage children and says that in addition to her business background, she also brings “a wide range of skills and abilities”.

“Hopefully by the end of this week we will be in a better position practically and can’t wait to get started,” she added.
