Several local children took on the roles of characters and biographies from the Idaho Springs Library to help solve the fictional death of John Doe in the first-person shooter game “Mystery on the Tracks.”

It’s part of the Clear Creek Library District’s summer reading program, where children, parents and library staff come together to explore new topics or adventures and provide pizza.

At the event on June 28, each child assumed the identities of characters including a Dutch woman, a widow, a nurse and a detective.

The players asked yes or no questions to the other “suspects,” who answered using a prepared script.

“So it really helps them practice narrowing down, starting big and then getting more specific,” said program and development coordinator Holly Grant.

Questions, laughter, and finger-pointing filled the room as new characters appeared and the plot intensified.

“It will be creative and acting and then everyone can guess who the killer is,” said Grant.

Some children said they were here for the adventure, friendship and the library’s famous mascot and storyteller, Miss Honeybun.

However, 11-year-old Finn Fulton of Empire said the food was also an attraction.

“I’m here for the fun, the pizza and the whole bowl of grapes I ate,” Fulton said.

The library district serves both Georgetown and Idaho Springs with the mission statement “The Clear Creek County Library District strengthens our community through literacy, human connection, and equal access to resources.”
