A suspected impaired man is accused of leaving two children in a car that was heated to around 38 degrees Celsius while he was shopping at Walmart.

At around 3 p.m., New York State Police were called because children were locked in an overheated vehicle and were “screaming” in the Walmart parking lot on State Highway 23 in the town of Oneonta.

The arriving officer said she found two children in a locked car “showing signs of heat illness.”

The outside temperature at the time was 99 degrees, police said.

“Concerned witnesses told the officer they called 911 after seeing the children crying and screaming in the vehicle and noticing that the windows were rolled up,” the New York State Police said in a press release. “The Good Samaritans gave the children water and placed cool towels on them when the officer arrived on the scene.”

The police officer removed a two-year-old girl from her car seat in the back seat and a five-year-old girl from a car seat in the front passenger seat.

The children were taken to AO Fox Hospital for examination.

Police say 39-year-old Kurtis D. Carpel of Mount Upon is responsible for leaving the young children in the hot car.

He was found in a Walmart with a 5-year-old boy. Police believe he was in the Walmart for at least 15 minutes before emergency responders arrived.

Police also claim he was impaired at the time of the incident.

Carpel was charged with two counts of Class D reckless endangerment and three counts of driving under the influence with a child as a passenger after an investigation determined he was impaired, police said.
