Two men have been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Shandon resident Santiago Maldonado Martinez in Los Olivos in March 2021.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch announced the murder charges Monday against Fabian Apolinar-Solano, 35, and Hilario Moreno Solano, 29.

On March 7, 2021, Martinez was found dead in a vehicle in the 6200 block of Foxen Canyon Road near Los Olivos. The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office had responded to an apparent car crash at that location, but quickly determined that Martinez was not involved in an accident and began investigating the death as a possible homicide.

Fabian was arrested on June 28 and arraigned in Santa Maria Superior Court, where he pleaded not guilty. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 8. He is currently in custody with bail set at $4 million.

Hilario remains at large and has a warrant out for his arrest. In addition to the murder charge, he is also accused of using a firearm in Martinez’s killing.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to contact Detective Matt Maxwell with any information regarding Hilario’s status and whereabouts.

Highway 154 will remain closed to through traffic between Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Valley for the foreseeable future
