Before Twisters hits theaters later this month, fans can see what inspired the upcoming disaster movie. The original Twisters returns to streaming in anticipation of the follow-up releases.




Twisters is now available on HBO’s streaming service Max and will officially premiere on the platform on July 1st.. The original film starred Helen Hunt (Dr. Jo Thornton-Harding) and the late Bill Paxton (Bill Harding). The film follows two divorced storm chasers who attempt to use a device for tornado research during a severe storm in Oklahoma. According to the official synopsis, “Now a storm chaser turned scientist, Jo risks her life to explore the dark side of nature by putting her data transmission devices directly in the path of a deadly storm, chasing the largest tornado ever to hit Oklahoma while her marriage falls apart and rival scientists stop at nothing to steal her breakthrough.”

Universal’s standalone sequel to the 1996 classic Twister is aiming to outdo the competition at the box office on its opening weekend.


The original Twisters was a critically acclaimed blockbuster, Jan De Bont’s film grossed $496 million worldwide at the box office and received two Oscar nominations. De Bont has long been convinced that Twisters could not be remade and was recently proposed Twisters comes out 15 years late and raises concerns about the sequel’s approach and use of CGI.

Twisters is set to premiere 28 years after the original film, although the film will be a standalone sequel and not a sequel to Twisters. Glen Powell, who plays social media star Tyler Owens in “The Storm Chaser,” Twistersinsists the film is not a reboot, telling Vogue last December, “We’re not trying to retell the story of the first one. It’s a completely original story,” but confirmed that no original characters will be involved.

De Bont also suggested Twisters would work better as a direct sequel than as a standalone story, telling Comicbook.com, “I think it would be really hard to remake my movie. And why would anyone want to remake it? What would they improve?” Sometimes you just have to leave things as they are, or you have to really make it a real sequel, a real sequel story, and not just a completely different story, but I don’t know. I’m excited to see what he did with it.”



Twisters will follow a new cast of characters

The Twisters The sequel tells the story of Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ meteorologist Kate Carter, who battles multiple converging systems moving through Oklahoma while Carter deals with a haunting encounter with a tornado from the past. The sequel also stars Transformers: Rise of the BeastsAnthony Ramos as Javi, Kate’s friend and partner in storm chasing. Although it is an original film, Powell revealed how Twisters and the stories of Twister are spiritually connected given their premises.

Twisters looks set for a solid opening weekend in theaters and hopes to make a significant profit on a $200 million budget. The film will apparently have a more mature tone than Twistersbased on its official rating.

Twisters will be in theaters on July 19th.
