JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. (KBSI) – A traffic stop led to a drug arrest in Johnston City.

Chad W. Karnes is charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Williamson County Sheriff’s Office officers patrolling the Johnston City area said they saw a vehicle committing several violations. They stopped the driver at 7:09 p.m. on June 27.

While we were speaking with the driver and filling out a written warning, a Williamson County Sheriff’s Office sniffer dog arrived at the scene to sniff the vehicle in the open air.

The deputies stated that sniffer dog “Shadow” was clearly alerted by the smell of drugs.

They searched the vehicle for suspicion.

Officers said they found a clear plastic bag containing methamphetamine in a travel bag containing men’s clothing.

They say the items belonged to Karnes, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Among the items was a birthday card with his name on it.

Officers said they also found a box containing an Apple iPhone that contained packaging waste, packing materials and syringes with residue that field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Karnes was taken to the Williamson County Jail.
