Analyst says Steelers should use QB Justin Fields as a read-option running back

There has been a lot of talk about how the Pittsburgh Steelers will use Justin Fields.

There were jokes from Jaylen Warren, who said that special teams coach Danny Smith wanted to use Fields on kickoffs, and then the Madden NFL 25 The trailer showed Fields returning a kick.

Now Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated thinks the Steelers should take advantage of Fields’ running ability in other ways.

“Imagine third-and-six from the opponent’s 45-yard line. Russell Wilson in the shotgun, Justin Fields lined up next to him like a running back, and then you can do zone reads,” Orr said on the MMQB Podcast. “Think of how many people in that in-between area have to be alert, focused, hesitant about what’s going on. Is Justin Fields going to get the ball and run? Justin Fields is back there, I need to put more people in coverage, there are more people back there.”

While some sort of Justin Fields package is certainly possible, would the Steelers use him as a running back in those situations? That would keep the defense on its toes and have a certain level of unpredictability, similar to how the New Orleans Saints used Taysom Hill. However, we’ll see how both quarterbacks perform in training camp and the preseason.
