Primoco UAV SE and T-Mobile Czech Republic have the possibility of integrating an LTE network BTS base station into the Unmanned aerial vehicle Primoco UAV One 150. The result is an advanced system that allows a significant reduction in the restoration time of the mobile network in emergency situations and is applicable throughout the EU.

Existing mobile crisis communication solutions for emergencies such as fires, floods and storms rely on alternative ground vehicle-based systems. However, their deployment is often impossible or too time-consuming. The integration of a BTS station into the Primoco UAV One 150 with a payload of up to 30 kg overcomes these shortcomings. The aircraft meets all European civil, military and safety regulations and is approved for operation in almost ten EU countries.

Ladislav SemetkovskýCEO of Primoco UAV SE, sees great potential in the cooperation: “Supporting crisis management is one of our key product lines. Unmanned technologies enable rapid deployment to locations where they are needed, and we see many opportunities for similar deployments in the Czech Republic, be it during major fires, tornadoes or floods. Cooperation with T-Mobile is a perfect fit for this system, as communication in affected areas is one of the most important services that must be provided in an emergency. Together with T-Mobile specialists, we integrated a new generation BTS station into our aircraft and verified the performance of this solution during a series of test flights lasting several hours. The entire system can be deployed anywhere in the European Union, as our aircraft fully complies with European regulations and the BTS payload does not affect the most important parameters of its operation and safety.”

Mobile phone coverage using drones is often the only way to ensure the operation of the mobile phone network in affected areas. Temporary coverage is also possible in places where the construction or densification of base stations is not permitted by law:

“Our solution, developed jointly with Primoco UAV, is quite unique in Europe. It can fundamentally support the work of the integrated rescue system and the army has also shown interest in it. But we are still at the beginning. We have a working concept, but we need to establish regulations within Europe and also start discussing synergies with EU governments to finance the operation of this solution,” says Jaroslav Holiš, Senior Manager for Research and Development, who is overseeing the project for Deutsche Telekom at T-Mobile.

The Primoco UAV One 150 carries 8 kilograms of T-Mobile equipment. The equipment is deployed at an altitude of one to two kilometers. The aircraft takes off and lands completely autonomously and the technology was tested at the Písek-Krašovice airport operated by Primoco UAV SE. Depending on the take-off weight, the UAV can stay in the air for up to 15 hours.
