How much does an NFL cheerleader earn? The new Netflix documentary series about the legendary Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders has raised some questions among viewers.

Becoming part of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, the NFL’s most legendary and famous cheerleading squad, is a dream come true. But the coveted job isn’t exactly well paid…

The brand new documentary series from Netflix America’s favorites: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders has become a viral hit and people on social media are now obsessed with the show and the dancers. The 7-part series follows the DCC squad through the 2023-2024 season as they audition for the team, go through training camp, and finally perform on the field.

While most people are impressed by the hard work and talent of the dancers in the series, others are shocked by the statements made about their pay.

NFL cheerleaders are contract workers, meaning they do not work full-time for teams and do not receive a salary. Instead, they are paid per game or per hour. Many cheerleaders also work second jobs in addition to their duties for the team.

The Cowboys cheerleaders may earn more than the league average, but it may not be enough to live on.

Former Cowboys cheerleader Kat Puryear revealed in the docuseries that she makes about as much as a “Chick-fil-A employee who works full time.”

Charlotte Jones, chief brand officer of the Cowboys, said in the documentary: “There’s a lot of cynicism about the pay of NFL cheerleaders – and that’s a good thing. They don’t get paid a lot. But the fact is, they’re not here for the money. They’re here for something that actually means more to them. They have a passion for dance. In the field of dance, there aren’t many opportunities to perform at an elite level.”

“It’s about being part of something bigger than themselves,” she continued. “It’s about them being able to form a sisterhood, about relationships that they have for the rest of their lives. They have a chance to feel valued, that they’re special and that they’re making a difference. When women come here, they find their passion and their purpose.”

Her comments have been criticized by viewers who believe the cheerleaders should be paid more. One X/Twitter user wrote, “Charlotte Jones acknowledging and validating #AmericasSweethearts’ low pay because it’s a ‘dream’ to even make the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad is so disgusting.”

According to Us Weekly, a 2017 ESPN report found that the average NFL cheerleader is paid about $150 per game. They also receive additional pay for practice time and public appearances. They are said to make about $22,500 per year, but since this report is several years old, it’s possible they’re making a little more now.

However, the Cowboys cheerleaders are said to earn more per game. According to a 2022 report from NBC Boston, the DCC team apparently earns around $500 per game, or about $15 to $20 per hour. The Dallas Cowboys are one of the richest sports franchises in the world, with a net worth of $9 billion.

Despite the rumors and speculation, even the director of the documentary series, Greg Whiteley, doesn’t know exactly how much each of them earns.

“I think that’s because it depends on how high-ranking you are in the group,” he said shine“As a group leader, you might even earn more, but I never knew that.”

In the past, several cheerleaders have filed lawsuits against the NFL to demand better pay.

In 2014, former Oakland Raiders cheerleader Lacy Thibodeaux-Fields filed the first class action lawsuit against the NFL regarding cheerleading compensation, accusing it of wage theft and gender discrimination.

Lacy claimed she was paid only for the hours she performed, not for rehearsal time or her work as an ambassador at Raiders events. At the end of the 2013-2014 season, she received a total of $1,250.

The Guardian writes that an NFL mascot, in comparison, could earn up to $65,000 a year.
