FRANKLIN – Puetz Road is scheduled to officially reopen Friday after a portion of the road was closed for more than a month due to a sinkhole.

The street from 51st to 68th Street has been closed since May.

Officials said what started as a small hole developed into a larger problem after a pipe leak and water erosion were discovered about 10 meters below the surface.

“When we pulled back the layers, we found that the road was over 30 feet deep and had been that way for some time. The water flowing from north to south was actually affecting the stability of the road,” says Franklin Mayor John Nelson. “We had to keep lowering and widening, and there were a number of problems we had to solve as we lowered.”

City officials said the road should be reopened Friday afternoon.

“We make sure we are constantly doing pressure and water testing before opening and making sure the roadway is repaired and safe for vehicle traffic,” said Mayor Nelson.
