(KNSI) – The space shuttle Inspiration was the last stop on Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy’s St. Cloud tour Thursday.

The replica of the vehicles that once took humans to the moon still stands on the launch pad and will likely be the centerpiece of a spaceport tourist attraction in at least two years. Murphy tells KNSI News that even in its humble state, the shuttle still inspires awe and that she believes it has found the perfect home.

“When I think of the American space program, it was born out of inspiration and belief in what we can accomplish together. And I think it’s fitting that it’s happening here in St. Cloud. And I’m excited to see what the community will do with this moment of inspiration and its focus on education.”

Murphy was in town as a guest of Sen. Aric Putnam of the 14th District, which includes St. Cloud, St. Augusta, St. Joseph and Waite Park. He reiterated that the idea of a spaceport attraction sounds more like something for New York or Chicago, but he believes it can work in central Minnesota, too.

“The fact that it seems too big for us is exactly why we have to reach for it. St. Cloud deserves beautiful things, and this can be one of those beautiful things.”

Inspiration Space Port officials are currently in preliminary talks about possible government funding for the facility. They told KNSI News that there is a lot of interest from companies and that the project could be launched in several ways. They expect the opening to take place in at least two years.
