Nuggets trade, finally get their Jokic replacement: Immediate reaction and analysis

All the speculation and rumors are finally over because the Nuggets have made their first-round draft pick and selected DaRon Holmes II out of Dayton, but they had to make a trade to do it. Denver traded the 28th pick, the 56th pick, and two future second-round picks to the Suns to move up to 22nd overall and draft the guy they’ve been craving all along. This is a big moment for the franchise because the Nuggets absolutely need to get something useful out of this pick and hope for immediate productivity.

This is a big moment for the franchise, as the Nuggets will definitely need to find this pick useful and hope for immediate production. The bench was a weakness last season and especially the depth of the backups in the frontcourt; Holmes should be a big help here.

He’s a versatile 6’10” big man with some perimeter defense skills on both ends. He can defend around the basket but also pop out to keep up with smaller players. On offense, he can do just about anything and extended his range to the 3-point line last season. With any luck, the Nuggets will finally stop losing points with Nikola Jokic sidelined.

Given the financial constraints the Nuggets face, this pick is crucial to roster construction going forward. Regardless of whether or not they can bring back Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, they will have little more than minimum contracts to throw around at the free agency level, so unless a big move comes to fruition, this could be their biggest offseason signing.

Who knows what the second round of the draft and the rest of the summer will bring, but the Nuggets have done a good job of closing a hole and filling a void. Holmes can help now and could play a big role for the team in the future. There’s even hope he can play alongside Jokic at times.

This is all great news for the Nuggets and fans should be excited. They had to get this draft done and it looks like they did. An A+ job in every way. There will be a lot more analysis on this pick, but Nuggets fans can sleep happy tonight!
