DEDHAM, MASS. (WHDH) – Testimony in the murder trial of Karen Read will continue Friday, continuing a dramatic week of proceedings.

On Thursday, jurors heard a series of voicemails that Read had left that morning from John O’Keefe.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, faces charges including second-degree murder after prosecutors say she struck her then-boyfriend O’Keefe with her car in January 2022 and left him for dead after dropping him off outside the Canton home of Brian and Nicole Albert.

Read’s defense claimed that the crime was being framed on her. O’Keefe was actually beaten to death and attacked by a dog during a party at the Alberts’ house.

The voicemails came during the testimony of State Trooper Nicholas Guarino, who testified after Judge Beverly Cannone ruled that two expert witnesses would be allowed to testify once the defense began presenting its case.

After a day of voir dire questioning to pre-screen potential witness testimony, Cannone did not comment on another potential defense expert, saying she would make her decision at a later date.

In addition to Guarino, two people who work in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also testified on Thursday.

Read’s lawyers claim police covered up details and fabricated evidence to implicate Read in the case. Among other things, the defense has focused on state trooper Michael Proctor as an investigator they say was involved in the alleged cover-up.

Read has pleaded not guilty in the case and maintains her innocence.

The proceedings will be streamed live on whdh.com, the 7News app and the 7News Facebook page.
