Chadd W. Lackey, the executive director of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation, was killed in a car crash early Wednesday morning after another driver ignored a red light, police said. Lackey was 55 years old.

“We are devastated by the tragic news of Chadd’s passing,” SCI Chair Tiffany Williams Brewer said in a statement. “On behalf of my colleagues and the entire SCI staff, we extend our prayers and deepest condolences to the Lackey family and loved ones.”

Lackey was driving when the crash occurred around 6 a.m. on Route 130 in Hamilton Township, Hamilton police confirmed to NJ.com.

A passenger in Lackey’s car was in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle that ignored the traffic light, a 51-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Chadd Lackey, Executive Director of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation,” Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement. “Chadd broke barriers as the SCI’s first Black Executive Director and rose through the ranks during nearly 20 years of service to our state.”

The New Jersey State Commission of Investigation (SCI) is a watchdog organization that investigates government waste, fraud and abuse, as well as organized crime.

Founded in 1968, the SCI recommends laws and procedures to state legislatures.

Most recently, the SCI investigated allegations of misconduct in the state’s congressional district redistricting process and investigated the state’s response to COVID-19 at state-run veterans homes in Paramus and Menlo Park, where 200 residents and staff died from the virus.

Lackey has worked at SCI for nearly two decades. Before being named executive director in January 2020, he served as deputy director and general counsel for nearly three years after serving as legal counsel for the agency for nearly 15 years. Before joining SCI, Lackey was an assistant district attorney in the Miami-Dade District Attorney’s Office, where he oversaw public safety in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He earned a business degree from Northwood University in Michigan before graduating from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law.
