Although it did not attract much attention when it was released in the 2000s, American Psycho has gained a huge cult following that put Christian Bale on the map. In recent years, audiences’ fascination with the character has only grown, and Patrick Bateman has become something of a role model for many of them, for better or worse, despite his psychopathic tendencies.

Although most would agree that Bateman is anything but an upright role model for anyone and his character serves as a parody of ultra-capitalism, this has not stopped fans from imitating him.

To say that Christian Bale’s mannerisms as Patrick Bateman are iconic would be an understatement. They have now become deeply ingrained in meme culture. This has led many to recreate his persona, but a recent cosplay by a fan may be the most impressive yet.

In response, one commented: “Close enough, welcome back, Patrick Bateman”while another shared, “Sounds like him, not out of character. Guys, it’s him.”Another user added: “It’s frightening how much he resembles him”and one emphasized “To the point”.

While it is obvious that there is a face filter, this does not detract from its spot-on imitation of one of Bale’s most iconic works, and it is safe to say that even The Dark Knight Star would be impressed.

Although it is difficult to imagine anyone else in the role of Bateman than the Batman begins Star, getting him the role was a difficult task for director Mary Harron. Since Bale was relatively unknown at the time, studios were initially against Harron’s decision to cast him in the adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel.

Luckily for Harron and Bale, studio bosses eventually relented, but given the actor’s relative unknown status, they signed him for the minimum fee for the job. However, this did not diminish the actor’s motivation to take the chance. And although he ended up doing an impeccable job, his co-star was not exactly thrilled with his performance as Bateman at first.

In 2020, Bale revealed about his co-star Josh Lucas:

Josh Lucas and I recently did a film together and he opened my eyes to something I hadn’t realized before. He told me that all the other actors thought I was the worst actor they had ever seen.

He told me that they kept looking at me and talking about me and saying, “Why did Mary fight for that guy? He’s awful.” And it wasn’t until he saw the movie that he changed his mind. And I was completely in the dark about that criticism.

As the story goes, his unusual antics as Bateman not only made him famous, but have also left an indelible mark on the internet’s meme culture.

American Psycho is available to stream on Netflix.
