SYLVAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Water safety concerns in Sylvan Township have been investigated and resolved following a break-in at the wastewater treatment plant earlier this week, officials said Wednesday.

Due to the collapse, a drinking water warning was issued for the area as a precautionary measure. About 300 households were affected by the warning and were told that boiling water was not enough.

The municipality delivered boxes of water to the affected neighborhoods.

Inside the plant, controls, some water valves and the scales used to weigh the chemicals added to the water were tampered with.

“This is very scary because it’s your water system,” Sylvan Township Public Works Director Robert Scull previously told 7 News Detroit. “It has to be as safe as possible.”

Skull said workers at the plant noticed someone had broken into the facility and vandalized it.

“The main control panel here… that’s all the circuit breakers for the equipment. Many of them have been thrown,” Scull explained earlier. “Equipment that was offline has been switched to automatic.”

We have been informed that samples taken this week meet state water quality standards.

Officials say residents can resume their usual activities but are encouraged to flush plumbing and appliances in their homes.

Michigan State Police said they found the suspect, a 33-year-old Belleville man, and arrested him at the scene. He cut the cable to the cameras, so it’s unclear when and why he broke in. However, a makeshift bed was found in the attic.
