The future of phones just got a little more expensive again. Samsung is raising the prices of its foldable and folding phones with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. The devices now cost $1,900 and $1,100, respectively, making them $100 more expensive than their predecessors. Samsung unveiled the handsets on Wednesday during its Unpacked event, alongside other devices like the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Buds 3.

This story is part of Samsung EventCNET’s collection of news, tips and advice on Samsung’s most popular products.

The Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6 feature Galaxy AI, the phone maker’s suite of AI-powered software features. The features are designed to simplify various tasks, such as translating conversations and editing photos. The latest Galaxy Z phones also come with the Google Gemini app, which offers an AI-powered assistant to help with writing and planning or answer your questions more thoroughly. Users can also take advantage of Circle to Search to get faster results on a web page, social media post or photo.

The phones also feature improved hardware. Samsung says this is the “slimmest and lightest Galaxy Z series ever” and it’s also more durable. The inner folding screens have been improved, with “improved layers on the main screen helping to improve the fold while maintaining strength,” the company added in a press release.

This host of new features seems to justify a higher price for Samsung. But that $100 increase adds even more to an already high cost for many consumers. The upward trend is also in line with price increases for other newer devices from phone makers like Samsung and Apple. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, for example, costs $100 more than last year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra, and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max also costs $100 more than the 14 Pro Max because the company eliminated the cheaper 128GB storage option. And with the starting price for many flagship phones hovering around $1,000, any increase can feel like a big increase.

Stay tuned for CNET’s first impressions and reviews of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, and to hear what our experts think of the series’ many new features and updates. In the meantime, the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 are available for pre-order now and will hit shelves (and mailboxes) on July 24.
